The Most Messed Up In The Crucible

In the crucible we all know that there are a lot of messed up characters that are in the play and they need some therapy, but we are going to talk about the least messed up to the most messed up. The characters are John Proctor, Abigail Williams, Reverend Hale, Reverend Parris, Mary Warren, Judge Danforth, and Mr. Putnam.

Now the least is Reverend Hale because he did start out as not the best but then he turned out to be one of the better characters in the play because he just wanted everyone to be saved and not to be hanged. Page 145 hale says “women plead with him!...” He just wanted proctor to say he was with the devil so he could live.

2nd least flawed is Mr. Putnam, all because this man wanted to steal someone's land so he wanted to kill someone. This is really all this man did when he was in the play and he is a good man but because he just wanted land.  Page 96 Giles says “my proof is there! If Jacob hangs for a witch he forfeit up his property-thats law! And there is none but Putnam with the; coin to buy so great a piece...” This shows the greed he has.

The 3rd is Mary warren. She is here because she is just a girl that wants to fit in with all the rest of them. With this it means that she is envious of these girls because she is not welcomed by the others. Page 80 Mary says “I cannot, they'll turn on me” this means that she doesn't want  to tell the truth because they don't like her. This just shows that she is a little girl that wants friends.

The 4th on the messed up list is John Proctor. The reason why he is messed up is because his sins are pride and lust. One other sin that John Proctor committed is that he did sleep with a child when he was married and that is committed adultery. That is one of the 10 commandments; you can't commit adultery. For pride the quotes are on page 143 John says “Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on my feet of them that hang!..” This shows that he has a lot of pride for his name. For the sin of lust and committing adultery is on page 23 when John says “I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut my hand before I'll ever reach for you again. Wipe it out of mind. We never touched, abby.`` This shows that he did lust for abby but not anymore.

The 5th is reverend Parris. The reason for this is because Parris doesn't care about anyone but himself and all he wants is a good reputation, Parris is also very prideful. On page 10 parris says “Abigail, i cannot go before the congregation when i know you have not opened with me…” the same page parris says “no - no. there be no unnatural cause here...” these quotes show that he is very prideful and only cares about his reputation. Parris is also in love with money and that sin is greed, when parris says “thirty-one pound is gone. I am penniless. He covers his face and sobs.” This shows that he cares about money way too much.

The 2nd most messed up is Judge Danforth. Danforth is messed up in the head because well he just started sending people to jail and killing them just because he was just talking people's word for it and believing what they were saying was true. Page 87 “And do you know that near to four hundred are in the jails from marblehead to Lynn, and upon my signature?” page 87 “And seventy-two condemned to hang by that signature?” So yeah he is using his power to hang and to jail people.

Ending with Miss Abigail Williams, the reason why she is first is because she was the first one to start accusing people of witchcraft, when really they had nothing to do with it. On page 48, act one, Abby says, after she confessed to dancing with the devil, she says, ”I saw Sarah Good with the devil! I saw Goody Osburn with the devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the devil!” this all could have been prevented if she just didn't say anything. Another thing that makes abigail flawed is that she told to girls that she would killed them if they told the truth and that is said on page 20 it says “i saw indians smash my dear parents heads on the pillow next to mine and i have seen some reddish work done at night, and i can make you wish you had never seen the sun go down...”

Those are my most to least flawed in my opinion.
